Snow Day

Enjoy the snow.

Please take time to go and play in the snow if you want to.

MATHS

Practise this week's times table.

On BBC Bitesize there are lots of Maths Activities. I've picked out some that will be useful to practise but you can look at any others as well. If you're not so confident with Maths, have a look at the Year 4 activities to help you secure skills.

Revise negative numbers on BBCBitesize.

What are negative numbers? - BBC Bitesize

KS2 Maths: Negative Numbers - BBC Teach

Select from these sections (or do all of them) to revisit factors, prime numbers, squared and cubed numbers. It's in the Year 5 section but this is for Year 6 too.

READING

Read for at least ten minutes. (You can read for longer, of course).

Read part of the text 3 times to make sure you have good fluency.

Write down and investigate the meanings of any words that are new or you're not sure of.

Write a short summary of what you have read- find the main points of the text.

Add your opinion about this text. Did you like it? Why or why not?

SPELLING

Here is a link to our Y5/6 spellings. Choose 10 to practise. Try to pick words that you think could be useful to you in your own writing.

WRITING

Write a short story about something that happens on a snowy day. You could hand write it or type it.

Make sure you describe the setting and introduce your character.

A story often has a problem to make it interesting. What is the problem in your story and how will it be solved.

Try to remember some of the good writing skills that you have learned in school and use them in your story: capital letters and sentence enders     powerful adjectives   expanded noun phrases

adverbs ( slowly   icily etc)       fronted adverbials     different types of sentence       conjunctions

 relative clause    simile/personification

Don't forget to put in some accurate punctuation.

I look forward to reading your story.

GET CREATIVE!

Have a go at some art or model making to create a

MYTHICAL BEAST (unicorn  dragon  chimera   flying horse   3 headed dog   werewolf    griffin   minotaur

centaur    hydra    loch ness monster    mermaid   phoenix    fairy   bigfoot    hippo griff

or your own invention).

You could use ( with your parents' permission)

paint   felt tips   crayons   wax crayons  pencil  pen

plasticine    magic sand   modelling clay   lego    k'nex      junk    paper mache

or SNOW!

Use whatever you have available and do the best quality work that you can.
